School library allies are committed to supporting the important work of school librarians, including providing diverse collections and supporting the needs of all readers. In the growing face of censorship, school librarians must find allies in the form of parents, stakeholders, and community members who can support and assist when book challenges arise.

Follow these steps to be a true ally to school libraries!

  1. Get Educated
    • Understanding the nuances of school library policies and procedures can be helpful . Do you know what a selection of materials policy entails? Ask your librarian about how they do their jobs day in and day out – school librarians are professionals!
  2. Get Involved
    • If you have an opportunity to provide a supportive voice to committees involving school libraries, be sure to join! When books are being challenged, offer your support when review committees are formed.
  3. Speak Up
    • Are library topics on the agenda at a Board of Education meeting? Sign up to provide public comment on the importance of school libraries and the Freedom to Read.
  4. Share Your Story
    • Libraries are an important part of our lives – they shape who we are through diverse stories and innovative services. Share your story of why school libraries are important – use your voice to show you are an ally!
  5. Advocate, Advocate, Advocate
    • Write your legislators about library issues – now more than ever decisions are being made at the state-level about library collections. We are better together and need the support from constituents to protect our libraries.
